In our study on Christian Ethics, we are continuing to examine the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus elevates the standard of righteousness by shifting the focus from mere external compliance to the internal condition of the heart, reinterpreting the Law of Moses in its true spiritual depth rather than abolishing it. He describes the essential inner characteristics of righteous people through the Beatitudes—explaining that true peacemakers aggressively pursue harmony and reconciliation from the heart, while those who are inevitably persecuted for Christ's sake must endure animosity without retaliation, fixing their minds on their ultimate heavenly destiny. This internal transformation naturally manifests in vital outer relationships, where believers act as "salt" to preserve a fallen world from moral decay and "light" to radiantly guide others to God without fear or concealment. Ultimately, Jesus applies this heart-centered righteousness to daily human conduct through profound contrasts regarding the body and speech: He equates internal anger and contempt with murder, defines lustful intent in the mind as adultery, restores marriage to a sacred bond to limit frivolous divorce, and commands absolute honesty so that a Christian's simple word is entirely reliable without the need for superficial oaths.
